Grenen – the tip of Denmark

Grenen is the very tip of Denmark. Here two seas converge, Skagerrak and Kattegat. Among the sandbanks, you can be lucky to spot wild seal. Close to Grenen, you find the Skagen Lighthouse from 1858. From here, you will have a full view of Grenen. Scale the 210 steps to the top of the lighthouse, which is open to the public.

Swimming is not permitted in the rippling current at Grenen, but there are enjoyable sandy beaches on both sides of the Skagen Peninsula.

A land of sand

The Skagen Peninsula offers scenic coastal nature with wide-open sandy beaches and heather dunes. Close to Skagen town, you find The Sand-Covered Church, which over the past 300 years has been buried by drifting sands.

Today, only the church spire remains. You can scale the tower and enjoy views of the coast and woodland. Northern Europe’s largest migrating sand dune can be found in Råbjerg Mile just south of Skagen. It consists of 3.5 million cubic metres of fine sand, which migrates through the coastal landscape at a speed of 15-20 metres per year.

Skagen is bathed in beautiful blue-toned natural sunlight, which is reflected from the sand and sea. The town has always attracted artists, not least the Skagen Painters, who settled in the old fishing hamlet in the late nineteenth century.

At Skagens Museum, you can view romantic paintings made by such famous Skagen Painters as Maria and P.S. Krøyer, Anna and Michael Ancher and Holger Drachmann.

Festivals and events in Skagen

Skagen offers inspiring sports and cultural events all year round. The popular Skagen Winter Bathing Festival is held in January for those relishing icy sea dips. Skagen is also particularly famed for its Danish Midsummer’s Eve celebrations on 23 June, not least due to the romantic depictions of the bonfire night by the Skagen Painters.

Denmark’s oldest music festival, the Skagen Festival, is held in sun-kissed July. The Skagen Marathon offers unique nature experiences in October. The marathon reaches all the way to the windswept beaches of Grenen.
