Tips on things to do in Karlstad

Sandgrund Lars Lerin

Situated 500 metres from the hotel in the newly renovated Sandgrund Restaurant next to the Värmland Museum you find Sandgrund Lars Lerin. This is artist Lars Lerin’s private art gallery.

Here you can see his permanent exhibition year-round and visit the guest exhibition room, where specially invited artists exhibit their works.

Mariebergsskogen & Naturum

Ten minutes’ drive from the hotel you find the forest of Mariebergskogen, which is Karlstad’s city park.

Here, you can experience the Naturrum Värmland visitors’ centre, a playground, the Open-Air Museum and the Lillskogen Zoo.

Free admission, free parking and open all year round. Perfect for recreation, play and natural inspiration.

Alsters Herrgård

Swedish poet Gustaf Fröding (1860-1911) was born at Alsters Herrgård 8 km outside Karlstad.

The heritage manor is set in scenic surroundings overlooking Lake Vänern. Take the opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee at the café, visit the art gallery and purchase local specialities from the manor farm store.

Waterbus trips – see Karlstad from the water

During the summer (June - August) there is regular waterbus service on Lake Värnen and the Klarälven river.

The tickets cost the same as urban bus fares, and boating is the perfect way to experience the city from a different angle.

If you would like to explore further afield and are up to longer boat trips, you can also sail to and from Kristinehamn, Grums and Borgvik.
